NEUROMED’s
general theme is Brain plasticity and behaviour.
Within this framework, NEUROMED will support
research and researchers in four areas, of crucial
importance to developed and developing countries:
Neurodegenerative diseases, mental disease and
neurotoxicity: NEUROMED will encourage research
into the biological and environmental mechanisms
underlying common diseases of the brain including
Alzheimers Disease and, Parkinson’s
Disease, Schizophrenia, Depression and other mental
disorders. By participating in this research, participant
labs will become part of a worldwide effort to
gain new insights into the etiology, diagnosis
and treatment of these disorders
Neuroplasticity, pain, development, learning and
education: N€UROMED researchers will participate
in research on the role of neuroplasticity in normal
and pathological development, and in possible applications
of this research in the clinic (e.g. in pain management)
and in education
Adaptation to environmental stress: A key theme
for N€UROMED will be research into the biological
mechanisms responsible for adaptive and maladaptive
responses to environmental stress, in children
and in adults. Results from this research will
provide new insights into the prevention, diagnosis
and treatment of stress-related mental disease,
with a special emphasis on acute and chronic stress
due to trauma, malnutrition, extreme economic insecurity
etc.
New technologies for neuroscientific research:
N€UROMED
will promote research into tools and technologies
for use in the Neuroscience lab and the clinic.
This research will place a special emphasis on
vital issues of affordability, maintainability,
and ease of use.
